A chance to pause, to move, to rest with the option of a short meditation... Men and women both experience depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions but Mens symptoms can be very different. Men who are depressed or suffering with anxiety may appear to be angry or aggressive instead of sad, their families, friends and even their doctors may not always recognise the anger or aggression as depression or anxiety symptoms.
In addition, men are less likely than women to recognise, talk about, and seek treatment for depression. Yet depression and anxiety affect a large number of men.
As stress is often a big factor in depression, a part of yoga’s effectiveness derives from its proven ability to allow the release of tension and lowering of cortisol levels. For the body to relax at its cellular level, a shift is needed to be made to create a state of deep rest and calm. Only mind-body practices like yoga, where the emphasis is on deep, restful breathing, allow this. Learning how to breathe more deeply and cultivating breath control: these simple things have an effect on your mental state.
Yoga teaches you the art of self-study, whether it’s your mental or physical state, which can also help you find clarity in other parts of your life — your relationships, your work, your ability to set aside time for yourself.
