If you have spent any time in a hot yoga studio, you know how to build heat. We know the transformative power of stoking a fire in our bodies. This heat provides a purifying force, intensifies strength building, and increases blood flow. The positive effects of integrating heat into our practices are staggering. But the goal in yoga is not to haphazardly build heat in an effort to intensify exercise. What separates yoga from other forms of physical exercise is cultivating the ability to intelligently build heat in the body with unhindered awareness and then to use that heat with intention and precision. The heat that we create in our practice is Tapas and it is the transcendent function of yoga. Tapas is the ability to stay in the center of the fire with nonreactivity and equanimity. Composed, clear, non reactive. This is yoga. Not attending a class in a heated room; but rather, attending a class in a heated room while maintaining integrity in form, precision in breath, and grace in movement. A hot yoga studio offers the opportunity to literally stand in the fire with grace and allow the fire to burn away the hold of attachment, aversion and habits. As Micheal Stone so eloquently states “Yoga occurs in the paradox when, through tapas, two opposing energies have lost their pull and reveal completeness.”
In this workshop we will intelligently and intentionally build heat in the body through asana and pranayama. Our objective will be to maintain allegiance to the breath and vivid awareness and precision in our movement throughout practice. The added challenge of practicing in a hot room offers us the opportunity to deepen our roots. To further cultivate our ability to stand composed, unwavering and with equanimity in the face of any conditions. This is yoga.
